Superwoman, they call today’s woman. Life is one big game of juggling for her as she balances a demanding career and an equally demanding job of a wife and a mother. As gender equations are changing all over the world, the woman of today finds herself at constant crossroads, at every step there is a struggle about choosing the call of a career over the responsibility of running a home.
A century ago, women were very rarely faced with such a dilemma because a world outside their home was unknown and their capabilities were deemed to be restricted to just running a home. At the dawn of the modern era, women have realized that their abilities are far more and that they can be on par with men in pursuing careers. That is how the modern woman stepped out of the threshold of her home and entered into the big world outside. Once in the career field, women proved themselves to be excellent resources, shown greater devotion and commitment to work with high efficiency levels. To the outside world, the woman became the superwoman, the mom became the supermom.
Yet, Superwoman or not, a woman continues to be a woman within. Her natural traits of being the care provider, as the balance behind a happy home, resurface always. There are many times when a woman is called to make a choice between her job and her home. When a woman chooses a job over her home, she is left guilt-ridden about neglecting her family, especially women with children. Choosing home over a career leaves a women feeling dissatisfied because every woman knows she is capable of much more and there is always that thirst to achieve more and do more.
Family support – key to a successful woman
Family is the basic support system for every individual and more so for women. Women who have had supportive families, where the husband plays an equally important role raising the children and managing the home, have been far more successful at their careers and as home makers.
With raising costs of living, it is becoming imperative for the husband and wife to earn. When both the parents are out working, there is a big worry about what happens to the children, who takes care of their well-being. While men are coming forward to take up the responsibilities of bringing up children, the woman is still regarded as the primary care provider for children.
Even at the peak of their careers woman turn back and look towards their families and are stressed out about maintaining a good work-life balance. Many capable women have confidently chosen home over careers, many have lost out on the corporate race because their need at home was much greater.
There is some relief for women though, corporates these days are providing flexible working hours for women who are valuable resources for their organization so that they can manage their career and home. All said and done, if a woman is unhappy about neglecting her home, it affects her career as well. More women are exploring working from home, home based businesses as lucrative career options which gives them the intellectual satisfaction and also enables them to take care of their homes.
The rate at which women are progressing, the next century could well be the century of the superwoman, yet the dilemma of a mother and a career woman continues.
