Women Related Issued in the Job Field
The new era women are no longer backbenchers in the field of career while competing with men. Rather studies show they are making better progress than men are and certain fields of job like nursing, service industry etc predominates women. It does not mean that women issues are concentrated only in third world and countries which are ruled by religion like the Muslim countries. Women issues and women rights are of basic concern all over the world and the United Nation’s reports show that the number of countries seeking reservation in social, legal and job prospects are increasing.
Women have entered in almost all jobs and sustaining properly. Yet some fields are untouched by women and some works prefer men to women showing a prominent discrimination of gender. Although, women have reached to the topmost leading positions and ruling successfully, there are managers and employers who still imagine recruiting women worker will create problems. Their baseless thought comes in the form of various barriers for women in the workplace. Besides, all working women bear the responsibility of household chores and kids that are not taken by men.
Here is a brief account on these aspects.
Sexual discrimination related problems of women at work-
1. Harassment during hiring- a woman candidate may face sexual harassment during the interview prior recruitment. Interviewer or somebody from the authority may ask for a sexual favor, either directly or indirectly, from the candidate as a condition to get the job. Any kind of verbal, nonverbal communication or physical touching that may make the interviewee uncomfortable is sexual harassment. The EEOC (Equal Employment opportunity Commission) will take action if the candidate lodges a petition stating sexual discrimination.
Some managers look down upon the abilities of a women candidate and pose questionnaire to make her feel weak. The candidate has to take responsibility to establish an equal status by emphasizing on her skills, qualities, competency and self-confidence.
2. The ‘glass-ceiling barrier’- a ‘glass-ceiling’ barrier is the invisible status related barrier that most women face while rising up in the hierarchical position of an organization. Many senior managers underestimate women, overlook their abilities and restrict growth of subordinate women candidates although they may deserve the promotion. This glass-ceiling barrier prevails during hiring too. There are people who think of women to leave job after few years for family responsibilities and child bearing related issues. Whereas, the fact is, women are more honest at work and give their best if get the liberty and flexibility to serve her duties for family and child.
3. Pregnancy and child bearing related issues- women have to give birth of children and bear them till certain age. This is a natural truth and many officers do not accept this fact easily. Paid maternity leave is very rare, leave without pay is possible but that may bring financial hardship. Again such action may bring the would-be mother in notice of her supervisor, and she may be tracked. There are records of court cases where the employer paid fewer pensions to a female worker just because she took maternity leave.
Till date in the society women work double shift- at home she cares for all family matters and devotes time in the workplace. There are legal supports in many countries to protect women rights at workplace but implementation is seldom. The seed of discrimination lies in one’s mind and an updated knowledge at the real picture may enlighten such person.
